MANILA, Philippines – Suspected communist rebels killed two soldiers in an attack Thursday in a northern Philippine province where troops are helping residents recover from a powerful earthquake, the military said.

Military officials said the attack by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) fighters in Malibekong town in Abra province left one soldier wounded and another missing. It was not clear if the rebels had captured the missing soldier.

An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale hit the province on Sunday and was felt in a wide area of ​​the country’s main northern Luzon region. Disaster officials said at least 44 people were injured in the quake that destroyed more than 2,000 homes, schools, hospitals and stone churches, and prompted the closure of an international airport for the night.

While local officials are helping the area recover, they are also preparing for an upcoming storm that could hit Abra and other neighboring provinces.

Military officials strongly condemned the rebel attack. They added that the soldiers who were attacked were ordered to return to the camp from the counter-insurgency patrols for possible deployment in the earthquake-stricken villages.

“This horrific ambush set up for our soldiers in disaster response mode is further evidence of their cruelty and inhumanity towards our compatriots,” said the brigadier general. General Audrey Basia said in a statement.

Basia said the army would continue to provide aid to the quake-hit area despite the attack.

There was no immediate reaction from the communist militia.

The military also reported a separate clash that killed two of at least seven communist fighters on Wednesday in the eastern province of Camarines-sur.

Five of the rebels managed to escape in the remote areas near the town of Garshitorina where the forces recovered the bodies of two dead rebels along with three rifles, two pistols, two anti-personnel mines, various types of ammunition and the belongings of the rebels, said the spokesman for the regional army Mag. John Paul Belleza said.

In the southern city of Davao, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led a ceremony in which he reiterated an earlier announcement by local officials that the large port city and five remote provinces, which includes an area that was once a rebel stronghold, is now “rebellion-free.”

“It’s a victory that proves that there is no place for extremism and senseless violence anywhere in the Philippines,” said Marcos Jr.

“I think there is no better way to commemorate the eradication of the insurgency in Davao than by declaring the area as a tourist and investment destination,” he said.

The Davao region, one of the most economically active regions in the south of the country, has been hit deep by the coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns.

The Maoist rebel force was established in 1969 with only 60 armed fighters in the northern region of the country but gradually expanded throughout the country and became one of the longest running communist insurgencies in Asia.

Combatants remain a major threat to national security despite battle setbacks, surrender and infighting. The insurgency has killed about 40,000 fighters and civilians and hampered economic development in remote areas where the army says several thousand militants are still active.
