WHO launches the 4th Health for All film festival
WHO has announced a call for short films for the 4th edition of the Health for All film festival.
“The WHO Health for All Film Festival has become an incredible platform to tell powerful stories from around the world about people facing all kinds of health challenges and those who have dedicated their lives to improving health,” said WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “The films provide an authentic way to connect affected people with others and contribute to a better understanding of the communities we serve.”
The call for short films (up to 8 minutes) opened on 31 October 2022 and will close on 31 January 2023. WHO invites public institutions, non-governmental organizations, patient and health worker communities, public health students and film schools from around the world. send your original short film to the world. The festival is also open to independent filmmakers, production companies and broadcasters.
About 70 shortlisted films will be presented to the public in April 2023 via WHO’s YouTube channel and Web page. From this list, a jury of distinguished professionals, artists, activists and senior WHO experts will select the award-winning films. Sharon Stone, the acclaimed US actress and public advocate for health and humanitarian issues, has confirmed that she will rejoin the jury in 2023, after participating in the 2022 festival. Three “GRAND PRIX” will be awarded, one for each main category, in line with the main global public health goals of the World Health Organization: universal health coverage, health emergencies, better health and well-being. There will also be special awards for films on climate change and health, sexual and reproductive health and rights, student-produced films and very short films (1′ to 2’30 inches).
The festival’s winning films help raise awareness and support for key health issues around the world. With an average of 1150 submissions each year from 110 countries, the films are increasingly being used by other institutions and partners for health promotion and education, and future synergies are being explored with the WHO Academy and WHO Behavioral Insights Programme.
“Storytelling is an engagement between people. It’s not just someone making the film, it’s someone watching the film,” said the Executive Director of WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme, Dr. Mike Ryan, a member of the 2021 Film Festival Jury. “This is exactly how WHO should be transformed : To transform the way we interact with the world and this festival is just one example of how we can change the way we think.”
In honor of WHO’s 75th anniversary in 2023, this call for films is also extremely open to historical films and recent films by students who share their visions of current challenges and future solutions to improve health. A special playlist will be created to highlight these testimonials.
