(CNN) — The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency on Friday issued a volcano advisory after detecting 36 small earthquakes between Thursday and Friday near Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano on Earth, which “is still in a state of increasing turbulence.” , according to CNN. The agency notes that Mauna Loa is not erupting and that “there are no signs of an imminent eruption at this time,” adding that the disturbances that caused the earthquakes are likely driven by a resurgent intrusion of magma two to five miles below the volcano’s summit.

The escalating turbulence at the volcano, with increased seismic rates, began in mid-September 2022. High seismic activity caused Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to close Mauna Loa Peak to all hikers in the countryside until further notice, the park announced in early October. The US National Park Service said the main section of the park remains open.

Seismic activity has been increasing from five to 10 per day since June 2022 to about 10 to 20 per day in July and August, according to the Geological Survey. CNN previously reported that earthquake numbers in excess of 100 were recorded on September 23 and September 29.

According to the agency, Mauna Loa, which covers half of the island of Hawaii, has erupted 33 times and last erupted in 1984.
