Hawaii says media hype is exaggerated over the possibility of Mauna Loa exploding

Today, the state’s marketing arm, HVCB, is warning the media to back off its troubled reports about the Big Island’s Mauna Loa volcano. They said, “Monaloa is not exploding, and there are no indications of an imminent explosion at this time.” The recent news of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) monitoring the Maunaloa volcano on the island of Hawaii should not cause travelers to change their travel plans to the island of Hawaii at this time. HVO continues to monitor any changes in Maunaloa, and issues daily updates until further notice.” The Big Island’s Mauna Loa volcano last erupted in 1984.

There is no reason at this time for travelers to change or change their leisure or business plans.

The media hype seems to be hurting Big Island tourism.

Everything is working normally on the Big Island, and we can confirm this as your editors have been there for the past week. All flights to Kona Airport and Hilo Airport also operate normally, although there are long Hawaii flight delays that visitors should consider. This has nothing to do with Mauna Loa.

The only thing that has changed is that “As a precaution, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has closed the Monaloa Back Peak until further notice.” However, Maunaloa Trail and Maunaloa Lookout, which sit at an elevation of 6,662 feet, are still open to the public.

Visit the USGS website at https://www.usgs.gov/volcanoes/mauna-loa.

What the USGS has to say:

It has been 38 years since the volcano’s last eruption, and since 1950, there have only been two such events. Most of the 33 previous volcanic eruptions occurred between 1843 and 1950. The USGS says, “The advisory alert level (yellow) does not mean that an eruption of Mauna Loa is imminent or that progress to an eruption from the current level of disturbance is certain.” The recent shallow earthquake sites are similar to those before the Mauna Loa eruption in 1975 and 1984, but other initial signals are missing.

When Mauna Loa broke out in 1984 against current conditions. 1984 Mauna Loa eruption. USGS.

When Mauna Loa last erupted in 1984, it came after 3 years of increased earthquake activity. These earthquakes arrived at a rate of 2-3 earthquakes per minute after the 6.6 earthquake in November of 1983. By March of 1984, small earthquakes had started with a high frequency. It is interesting to note that telescopes at nearby Mauna Kea, about 26 miles away, have stopped working due to the constant shaking caused by the earthquake.

The current seismic disturbances consist of 40-50 per day, which is twice what it was. This is in no way comparable to the 2,880 to 4,320 daily earthquakes that began with the 1984 eruption.

Some examples of recent media article titles:

CNN. Dozens of earthquakes have been detected while Hawaii’s Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, remains in ‘increasing turmoil’.

People. Hawaii residents warned of a potential ‘lava catastrophe’ as the volcano roared.

today. “Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, shows signs that it may erupt.”

AP. “The Big Island of Hawaii gets a warning with the roar of a huge volcano.”

ABC: “Mauna Loa volcano erupts in Hawaii.”

Forbes: “Hawaii Travel Update: Mauna Loa Shows Signs of a Possible Eruption.”

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
