Radio amateurs support the Great ShakeOut 2022 competition in Puerto Rico

Students from the University of Puerto Rico’s Crop Protection Student Association at Mayagüez participated in a communication practice session as part of the amazing ShakeOut Training for Puerto Rico on October 20, 2022. International ShakeOut Day attracts millions of people around the world to participate in earthquake drills at work, school or home.

Lida Rios, WP4RBK, Assistant Division Manager, ARRL Division of Puerto Rico, gave a conference entitled “Radio Services and the Great ShakeOut,” which provided practical advice and activities on how to use various personal radio services in the event of an earthquake. The faculty and students learned about Amateur Radio and many other radio services. The participants had the opportunity to speak with several amateurs using simple frequencies and repeaters. Many were interested in learning more about radio communications, and the event answered questions about how amateur radio can help during emergencies when other means of communication fail.
