Phillies fans didn’t cause an earthquake during Game 3 at Citizens Bank Park

Philadelphia (WPVI) – It’s no secret that Phillies fans are loud and bring serious energy to Citizens Bank Park.

In a neighborhood about a mile from the park in South Philadelphia, people could hear the roar of the crowd, and some said they felt it during Game Three of the World Championships on Tuesday night.

“You can feel it from everywhere here,” said Heather Uber, who lives near Ball Park.

She clearly hears the games being played nearby with her other neighbours.

“When we were sitting here, it all sounded like a roar,” said Melissa Flocco, who lives down the street.

But could 46,000 fans cause an earthquake? That was the claim made in a viral tweet that has been shared and liked thousands of times. It claimed that key moments during the match were recorded on a seismometer on the Pennsylvania State University Brandywine campus.

“We definitely have a Phillies red wave going. We don’t have a continuous seismic wave,” said Laura Gorten, a professor of geosciences at Penn State.

She said the school was filled with questions after the tweet started circulating. I looked at the data and found that the information in the tweet did not originate with it.

She said it wouldn’t be possible for fans to generate enough energy to move the Earth’s crust, even if they were all jumping around like they were on Tuesday night.

But she understands why people said they felt the energy from the pitch.

“This can cause structures to vibrate, and you can feel the energy being transmitted either through the ground or through the concrete surfaces,” Gorten said.

But as a Phillies fan, she admits, she wanted to believe it was true.

“Of course I wanted to believe it like everyone else. But I actually knew we were 20 miles from the stadium,” she said.
