NDRRMC publishes tsunami scenario in Quake 4Q drill – Manila Bulletin

The tsunami scenario will be included in the fourth quarter of the National Synchronous Earthquake Training (NSED) of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

NDRRMC spokesperson Bernardo Raffaeleto Alejandro IV said the fourth quarter of the NSED will take place on November 10 as part of ongoing efforts to enhance earthquake preparedness.

The Paranaque City Government will be the host for the ceremonial push of the button and all-out exercise. Similar scenarios will be held simultaneously by local disaster risk management boards across the country.

The highlight of the exercise is the simulation of a 8.3-magnitude earthquake that caused a tsunami – a series of large tidal waves often caused by the displacement of a large amount of water – in coastal communities and what needs to be done to reduce losses. Tsunamis can be caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and other underwater eruptions.

The incorporation of the tsunami scenario is expected to raise awareness of the observance of International Tsunami Day on Saturday, November 5th.

“We once again invite the public to join NSED in the last quarter of this year,” Alejandro said.

The NDRRMC official indicated that the exercise will test Paranaki City’s tsunami emergency plan and clarify evacuation procedures in the local community.

He also stated that the exercise will test joint water search and rescue efforts, air rescue capabilities as well as the interoperability of the communications systems of the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Philippine Air Force. (PAF).

According to NDRRMC, there have been many instances where an earthquake triggered a tsunami in the Philippines such as the 8.1 Morro Bay earthquake in 1976 and the 7.1-magnitude Mindoro earthquake in 1994.

The Morro Bay earthquake occurred on August 17, 1976 near the islands of Mindanao and Sulu. It caused a tsunami of 13 to 16 feet (four to five meters) that affected 700 kilometers of coast in Morro Bay and killed about 5,000 to 8,000 people, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Meanwhile, the Mindoro earthquake on November 15, 1994 occurred due to the movement of a 35-kilometer-long land fault called the Aglobang River Fault. The earthquake triggered a tsunami that reached a vertical height of 28 feet (8.5 meters) in the Baku Islands, according to field survey reports, and killed more than 70 people.
