As earthquakes continue in Afghanistan, UNHCR has decided to build 1,000 “earthquake-resistant” homes for more than 8,000 earthquake-stricken people in Barmal district of Paktika province in southeastern Afghanistan.

“UNHCR Afghanistan is moving quickly to provide 1,000 earthquake-resistant homes for more than 8,000 people in Barmal district before snow cuts off the remote area,” UNHCR Afghanistan wrote on Twitter.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said in tweets on Thursday that the homes would be handed over to earthquake victims.

Earlier in August, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced the start of a community-based construction effort of more than US$14 million to build 2,300 earthquake-resistant homes to help residents in southeastern Afghanistan devastated by the deadly June 22 earthquake.

Under the plan, the commission will provide materials and subsidize construction costs for the construction of 2,000 winter homes each in Jayan and Barmal districts of Paktika province and 300 homes in Sabra district of Khost province, Khama Press reported.

Earth-moving equipment contracted by UNHCR has begun clearing the site in Barmal and trucks are delivering construction materials where snow is expected by mid-November.

Over recent weeks, UNHCR teams have met with local communities to present the project, identify the most affected families, and organize community groups to implement the community scheme.

In addition to building materials, families participating in the project will receive 700 USD for labor. Engineers working with UNHCR partners will monitor construction until relevant guidelines are followed.

Over the past four decades, Afghanistan has suffered from conflicts and natural disasters that have left millions facing famine and starvation. The latest estimates indicate that about 24 million Afghans, more than half of the country’s population, are in need of humanitarian assistance.

There are about 3.4 million people displaced by the conflict in Afghanistan, in addition to 1.57 million people displaced by the climate, making it one of the most complex humanitarian crises in the world.
