Earthquake reports in KZN

Numerous reports of an earthquake appeared in parts of KZN this afternoon.

Social media was an uproar with residents flocking to Facebook and Twitter shortly after 2:30 p.m., wondering if anyone else felt it.

According to the tweets, the earthquake was felt by people from Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Greattown, Eshaw and even Richards Bay.

According to independent meteorologist and disaster risk reduction specialist Dr. Angelo Horn, who runs the Facebook group for Severe Weather and Information (Swaicsa), the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.6.

Horn recorded the quake 34 km west of Kwadukuzha at 2.32 pm, saying the depth of the quake was 10 km.

A few moments before the earthquake, Pietermaritzburg was hit by a hailstorm.

This comes after the South African Meteorological Services (SAWS) issued a warning of severe thunderstorms in the Midlands and western parts of the province over the weekend.
