Nantou County has been awarded Historic Heritage status to the ruins of a temple that collapsed during the Jiji earthquake on September 21, 1999, it was reported yesterday.

The ruins of the ancient Wuchang Temple in Jiji Town (集集) became a county-level recognized heritage site after a review by a panel of experts on September 8, a decision that was finalized on October 27, the Nantou Cultural Affairs Bureau said in a statement.

The 7.6-magnitude earthquake killed 2,456 people and injured 10,718, while 53,661 homes were destroyed and nearly many more damaged, with repair costs estimated at NT$300 billion (US$9.32 billion).

The ruins of the ancient shrine – which is next to the reconstructed Wuchang Temple – were untouched after the collapse, the bureau said, making the wreck a memorial to a major historical event that should be preserved for future generations.

She added that the remains of the temple are the only relics preserved from the earthquake.

She added that the temple’s building style and architecture were not created to withstand strong earthquakes, making the monuments valuable for educational purposes.

She added that the destroyed structure displays the classic features of traditional Taiwanese Taoist temples, including undulating roof tiles, water channels and other decorative elements set at eye level for viewing as the building collapses.

Construction of the temple began in 1991, a year after a man named Huang Chao-tieh (黃) donated a lot to honor the Taoist deity Xuantian Shangdi (玄天), according to office records.

Huang oversaw the construction of the temple, which was almost complete when the earthquake struck.
