3.9 earthquake in Yucatan peninsula did not leave any injuries or damage

Mexico’s National Seismological Service reported Sunday’s earthquake in the Yucatan Peninsula. There were no reports of injuries or structural damage.

The 3.9-magnitude earthquake at 6:32 p.m. was thought to have had its epicenter near Canacin, southeast of Mérida. This was later corrected, but nonetheless, locals noted that they only felt a shiver but heard “strange sounds in the sky”.

The epicenter was later updated to be in Jose Maria Morelos, above the state line in Quintana Roo.

Kanasin authorities have asked residents to remain calm and avoid spreading false information.

However, the National Seismological Service reported that the epicenter was located in the Yucatecan Territory: 26 kilometers southeast of Peto.

On the other side of the country, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook the Baga Peninsula early Friday, with no reports of damage or injuries.

The US Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was 50 miles/80 kilometers southwest of Bahia de Kino in the Gulf of California. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 6.2 miles/10 kilometers.

Three tremors have been recorded in Yucatan in the past five years. The peninsula would likely have felt the effects of a long-range seismic event.
