Experts suggest harvesting bamboo to build earthquake-resistant homes in Manipur

As Manipur is a seismic zone, many experts in the state stress the need to integrate disaster plans for high intensity earthquakes, and suggest harvesting bamboo to replace heavy materials with scientifically processed bamboo as an earthquake-resistant building material, as part of disaster management plans.

Many bamboo experts are of the opinion that bamboo, which is abundant in northeastern India, can be harvested for earthquake-resistant houses and other types of construction. They see the need to integrate the technological aspect of bamboo harvesting and construction with the cultural aspect of the northeastern region to produce a more earthquake-resistant, traditional architecture for the region.

The perceived need was raised during an international symposium on “Bamboo Cultivation, Hardening and Bamboo as Earthquake Resistant Materials for Building” held in Imphal East.

“Since Manipur is a seismic zone located in the ‘High Hazard Zone’ (V), we have to be careful about the use of heavy construction materials. We need to replace heavy materials with bamboo with a different scientific treatment,” RK Ranjan said at the opening seminar on Monday.

Apart from the geographical indication, Ranjan shed light on the cultural and spiritual significance associated with bamboo in Manipur. He recalled how villagers used bamboo in the state and called for a scientific explanation of local practices and knowledge system.

“All the homeland was surrounded by bamboo. We use bamboo products. We have to note categorically and in different ways how bamboo relates to our society and with civilization culturally. From birth to death, we are related to bamboo.

“In Manipur, there are certain villages in the Meitei community where young boys and girls bathe with bamboo leaves every Saturday of March. It may be an act of protection from sin all year long.

Ranjan emphasized the need to know the scientific explanation, “In Manipur, folk song or folklore is associated with bamboo in the form of basi (bamboo flute).”

The minister also referred to the switch from bamboo to other materials for weddings or other ritual ceremonies, saying, “The civilization of Manipuri was based on bamboo. The cavalry used by Arambay was made of bamboo. This cavalry was used during the war.”

He said that considering the value and benefits of bamboo, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has added bamboo among the forest agricultural products.

Referring to tissue culture from bamboo, he said that bamboo generates the highest percentage of oxygen, so why not create an oxygen garden on the tissue culture side, as it will be used as an economic resource.

Head of Bamboo Science and Innovation, Global Bamboo Ambassador, Jean-Luc Koyumji, said the symposium in Manipur aims to change the value of bamboo.

“We are running out of everything, one day we will only use concrete to grow our future with bamboo, together we can change the value of bamboo. The carbon dioxide that bamboo captures is a phenomenon in the tropics especially in seismic areas,” he added.

Sharing the unique culture of bamboo use in Myanmar and Manipur, Professor Irrawaddy Bambu, Mandalay, Myanmar, recalled the history of Manipur when bamboo was used to build horse cavalry to transport Myanmar’s men of war.

The development led to the destruction of the growth of bamboo. However, there are many benefits to bamboo… So, given its importance, let’s develop bamboo, we have to think globally. He said Manipur lacks a technologically backwards, so the exchange is important.

Chief Scientist, CSIR-NEIST, Imphal, H Birkumar said the growth of bamboo in Manipur is declining rapidly, but is beginning to regenerate. The bamboo colony has disappeared from the state. The state was facing a shortage of bamboo due to climate change, soil fertility, etc.

“We can’t grow bamboo on the roads, regeneration bamboo is best in hilly areas,” Berkumar said, adding that every part of the bamboo, some of which can be used for medicinal purposes.

It should be noted that the amazing diversity of bamboo is not a secret of the owners of the Green Revolution. The plant also known as Green Gold or poor man’s timber found in northeastern India accounts for 65 percent of India’s total bamboo resource. The region is also highly prone to earthquakes as evidenced by the earthquakes of 2016, 2020 and 2022 in the recent past. There is a need to integrate disaster plans for high intensity earthquakes, and there is a need to integrate the technological aspect of bamboo harvesting and construction with the cultural aspect of the northeastern region to produce a more traditional earthquake-resistant architectural building.

Based on these objectives, the University of Manipur organized a two-day international symposium; CSIR-NEIST, Lamphelpat and Apunba Imagi Machading (AIMS), Manipur, supported by Babina Healthcare and Hospitality Industries Pvt Ltd, Department of Public Works and Manipur State Bamboo Mission.

The inaugural session of the seminar was also attended by Lt. General (Ret.), Konsam Himalayas, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, YSM; Megachandra Singh, Co-Director, ICAR Research Pool for NEH Region, Lamhelpat; S Manikanta, Additional Director (retired), Ministry of Health, Government of Manipur; Professor Lal Bihari Singh, Department of Life Sciences, University of Manipur.

Marging Industries CEO Atom Sunil spoke on “Northeast: India’s most seismically sensitive region” and Sarda Maibam, Department of Earth Sciences, University of Manipur, spoke on “Seismic Site Classification and Friction Analysis for Imphal”.

Scientist B, MARSAC Earth Sciences, Planning Division, L Ramananda spoke on “Earthquakes and Bamboo Resources in Manipur” and Assistant Director of the National Bamboo Mission, N Somorendro spoke on the “Manipur State Bamboo Mission”.
