6 dead in Dhoti, strong tremors shake Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad

Six people were reported killed after a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal early Wednesday morning. Strong tremors were also felt in Delhi, Noida and other plains in northern India, keeping people from sleeping.

Three earthquakes hit Nepal over the course of 24 hours. The first earthquake measuring 5.7 was recorded at 9:07 pm (local time) on Tuesday followed by another earthquake at 9:56 pm (local time) with a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale. The third is the most powerful earthquake that caused panic in India and Nepal.

According to a senior Nepalese official, three people were killed when the tremor destroyed their house in the hill country of Jiragon.

The earthquake triggered panic in Delhi and other northern Indian states. People sleeping in their homes rushed outside. Thousands of Twitter users started asking if it was really an earthquake or just a figment of their imagination. Many reported that their beds started shaking due to the earthquake.

The epicenter was 90 km southeast of Pithuragarh in Uttarakhand, bordering Nepal.

A local official told Nouakchott News Agency that five people were injured in the collapse of the houses and dozens of houses were damaged by the landslides caused by the earthquake.

Officials said the Nepalese army has been mobilized in the affected areas to carry out search and rescue operations.

On October 19, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Kathmandu.

In 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake killed about 9,000 people in Nepal and injured nearly 22,000.
