At least six people were killed and five injured when a strong 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck western Nepal early on November 9, authorities said.

The National Center of Seismology said the epicenter of the 6.3-magnitude earthquake at 1.57 am was in Nepal, about 90 kilometers east and southeast of Pithuragarh in Uttarakhand. The area has been experiencing less strong earthquakes in the past few days.

In April 2015, a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, killing nearly 9,000 people and injuring nearly 22,000 others. It also destroyed more than 800,000 homes and school buildings.

Nepal Army spokesman Narayan Salwal said a ground rescue team had rushed to the site and two helicopters were parked nearby in the nearby towns of Surkhet and Nepalgunj.

Second earthquake in 24 hours

“I am only 80 km away from the epicenter of this earthquake… I tell you guys… I was in a deep sleep. My table started crashing into the wall… the mirah made a sound… and my bed shivered… it lasted no less than 50 to 70 seconds,” wrote one user Dinesh Sharma, who said he resides in Pilibhit near the border.

Neha Yadav, another Twitter user, said she had been in Delhi for four years and had never felt such tremors.

A 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck Uttarakhand on November 6 with an epicenter 17 km east-southeast of Uttarakshi.
