Six dead after strong earthquake hits Nepal, shakes New Delhi

KATHMANDU – A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal in the early morning hours of Wednesday, November 9, killing at least six people, destroying several homes in the western Dhoti district and shaking India’s capital, New Delhi, officials said.

Five more people were seriously injured in the collapse of eight houses, Duti’s deputy commissioner of police, Paula Bhatta, confirmed an earlier figure cited by Home Ministry official Tulsi Regal. Police said the wounded were rushed to a local hospital.

Nepal is still rebuilding after two major earthquakes in 2015 killed nearly 9,000 people, destroyed entire towns and centuries-old temples and dealt a blow to the economy worth US$6 billion.

“I express my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who died in the earthquake,” Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba wrote on Twitter. I have instructed the relevant authorities to arrange the immediate and proper treatment of the injured and victims.”

A ground rescue team has been moved to the site, and two helicopters were on standby in the nearby towns of Surkhet and Nepalgunj, Narayan Salwal, a spokesperson for the Nepal Army said.

Kalpana Shrestha, a senior bureaucrat in Dotti district, said details were collected from villages near the epicenter and that one of the children was among those rescued from the rubble.

The Nepal Seismological Center put the quake at a magnitude of 6.6. The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) had associated the earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6.

The center added that the quake was centered 158 km northeast of the densely populated city of Bilibet in the neighboring Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and occurred at a depth of 10 km.

After the quake, media reports showed that tremors were also felt in New Delhi and the surrounding areas, 350 km from Duty.
