At least six people were killed and five injured after two successive earthquakes jolted the Duti district in western Nepal since Tuesday evening, the National Seismological Center said.

The first quake with a magnitude of 4.9 struck the region at 8:52 p.m. on November 8, while a second quake with a magnitude of 6.3 struck the region at about 1:57 a.m. on November 9.

Dozens of homes were damaged by the quake, while local residents reported landslides in several places.

Strong tremors from the second quake were also felt in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh as well as Delhi and its vicinity, sending many out of their homes in the middle of the night, the National Seismology Center said. The tremors lasted for about 10 seconds.

Panic prevailed in several areas, and people remained outside their homes for nearly two hours after feeling the tremors.

The second quake had a depth of about 10 kilometers, according to the National Center for Seismology.

A few hours later, at around 6:27 am on Wednesday, a third earthquake of magnitude 4.3 was reported from the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand.

The National Center for Seismology said: “A 4.3 magnitude earthquake, occurred on 11-09-2022, 06:27:13 IST, Latitude: 29.87, Length: 80.49, Depth: 5 km, Location: Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand.”

An earthquake of magnitude 4-4.9 is considered moderate, 5-5.9 moderate and 6-6.9 strong.
