Nepal earthquake: At least six dead as a result of a powerful 6.6-magnitude quake in areas as far away as Delhi

At least six people were killed after a powerful 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal on Wednesday.

While the National Seismological and Research Center of Nepal provided initial measurements of 6.6, the USGS gave a rating of 5.6.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) measured the 5.6-magnitude earthquake and said its epicenter was about 158 ​​kilometers (100 miles) northeast of Bilibet, in the neighboring Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

The tremors caused by the quake forced people to leave their homes in the Himalayas and were felt as far away as the Indian capital, New Delhi, about 400 km away.

Officials said that casualties were recorded in Doti district, where five others were injured.

Six people were killed when they were crushed in their homes in a remote, sparsely populated mountain village, the Associated Press reported.

Ms. Shreshta added that security officials have been deployed to remote villages to assist in the rescue efforts.

While there were reports of damage to homes in many villages, there were no new reports of injuries.

A Nepalese army spokesman, Narayan Salwal, was quoted as telling Reuters that a ground rescue team had rushed to the site and two helicopters were on standby in the nearby towns of Surkhet and Nepalgunj.

In a statement on Twitter, Nepali Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba said relief and rescue operations are underway.

Strong tremors were felt in several parts of India.
