Researchers track earthquakes across Colorado and warn of potential for massive earthquakes

140 years ago, Colorado was hit by the largest earthquake ever with a magnitude of 6.6. Researchers say another massive earthquake could cost the country billions of dollars in repairs.

With Colorado’s largest earthquake shaking across multiple states, an earthquake of this magnitude is unlikely but researchers believe it could still occur today.

On average, Colorado can experience 50 to 70 earthquakes annually with a minimum of most of them. Researchers believe that studying earthquakes is necessary so that they can determine when the next massive earthquake will occur.

“What the research has done is collect and map all of our information,” said Matt Morgan, director of the Colorado Geological Survey.

Morgan also studies with the Colorado School of Mines to gain a better understanding of extensive research.

“Every year we’ve had earthquakes, we’ve had about 50 earthquakes so far this year,” Morgan said.

The researchers reported that the last reported earthquake occurred in Ridgway on Sunday.

The Colorado Geographical Survey collects data from nine field monitors across the state that notifies live updates of ground motion.

“It helps us understand the risks we face here in Colorado,” Morgan said. “We’re trying to learn from the past to bring that into the future.”

Morgan often refers to the largest earthquake in Colorado that was reported on November 7, 1882, on election night.

“In Denver in the evening, there were journalists working for the Rocky Mountain News who felt a violent jolt while writing their stories. In Grand Junction, people ran out of their homes,” Morgan said.

According to researchers, a massive earthquake like the one that occurred on election night 140 years ago could cost Colorado nearly $30 billion in repairs.

“We have devastating earthquakes here in Colorado,” Morgan said.

Community members in Colorado can also submit their own seismic observations which are an important part of the research. The community is encouraged to submit their research to the Colorado Geological Survey.
