Six dead in strong earthquake in Nepal; Tremors felt in North India

New Delhi: At least six people were killed and five others injured when a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck western Nepal early Wednesday morning. Several homes close to densely populated towns were destroyed.

The quake was felt in Kathmandu, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh as well, as noted on social media.

According to the National Seismological Center of Nepal, the quake occurred at 2.12 am with the epicenter in Khaptad National Park in Doti District.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) had associated the earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6.

The center added that the quake was centered about 158 ​​kilometers northeast of Bilibet, a densely populated city in Uttar Pradesh, and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.

All the victims were killed by the wreckage of houses damaged during the quake, Deputy Police Inspector Paula Bhatta, Acting Chief of District Police Office in Doti, said.

Nepal Army spokesman Narayan Salwal said a ground rescue team had rushed to the site and two helicopters were parked nearby in the nearby towns of Surkhet and Nepalgunj.
