Nepal earthquake is a reminder that Uttarakhand earthquake time bomb
Wednesday’s earthquake brings to mind the devastating 2015 Nepal earthquake and makes us think about the dangers ahead.
The 2015 earthquake in Nepal left a trail of devastation.
By Tirtu Banerjee: Nepal was hit by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in the early hours of Wednesday, killing six people. Tremors were felt in northern India including Delhi, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Lucknow.
The National Seismology Center said the epicenter was in Nepal, about 90 kilometers east and southeast of Pithuragarh in Uttarakhand.
NCS data showed that at least two earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.9 and 3.5 occurred late Tuesday night in the area. On Sunday, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck Uttarakhand, with its epicenter 17 kilometers east and southeast of Uttarakshi.
Recall the 2015 earthquake in Nepal
Wednesday’s earthquake brings to mind the devastating 25 April 2015 earthquake near Kathmandu, Nepal. The 7.8-magnitude earthquake, which occurred just before noon, killed more than 9,000 people and injured thousands. It also caused deadly avalanches around Mount Everest.

The massive earthquake left a chain of devastation, destroying 600,000 buildings in Kathmandu and other nearby areas. The northern parts of India, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Tibet also felt shocks.

Countless Nepalese were rendered homeless as entire villages were razed to the ground. Buildings have been damaged in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Kathmandu, including some at Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Changu Narayan Temple, Budhanath Stupa and Swayambhunath Stupa.
Aftershocks were felt throughout Nepal. One of the aftershocks measured 6.7 on the Richter scale the day after the quake. Initial damages from the earthquake were estimated to range from $5 billion to $10 billion.
Uttarakhand sits on a ‘seismic time bomb’
Experts said the hill state has seen 700 small earthquakes in the past decade. Afraid that the “big” is close to the corner. Earthquakes have been less intense (3 degrees) in the past 10 years, according to data collected by the Doon-based Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG).
A 4.5-magnitude earthquake was felt in Tehri on Sunday. Experts observed a massive earthquake in the Central Seismic Gap (CSG) region.
After the 2015 Nepal earthquake, seismologists warned that Uttarakhand was “standing on a ticking bomb by the earthquake”.
Simon Klimberer, Professor of Geophysics and Geosciences at Stanford University in the US is reported to have said, “The earthquake in Nepal is much smaller than the earthquake we are concerned about happening here. We don’t know when the earthquake will happen, tomorrow or in 200 years. What we do know is It will happen and millions of Indians will lose their lives.”

We expect a large earthquake, over six on the Richter scale, that could cause significant damage. A strong earthquake will hit Uttarakhand. It could happen today, tomorrow or in the near future but it will happen”, said Dr. Anil B Joshi, founder of Himayalan Environmental and Conservation Studies Organization (HESCO), at some point.
Among the 13 districts in Uttarakhand, Chamoli and Bageshwar are under 100 per cent seismic sensitive zones while five districts, including Dehradun, Champawat, Nainital, Udhamsingh Nagar and Hridwar, are under 100 per cent sensitive zone, a report said.
Why is the region prone to earthquakes?
The Central Himalayas is one of the most seismically active regions in the world.
In 1905, a massive earthquake hit Kangara. In 1934, there was an earthquake between Bihar and Nepal, with a magnitude of 8.2 and killing 10,000 people. In 1991, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake in Uttarkashi killed more than 800 people. In 2005, 80,000 people were killed in Kashmir after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the region.

Studies conducted in 2016 indicated a tectonic stress in the region over 700 years ago that may be released now or 200 years later. This will have a major impact on the central Himalayas.
Seismologists believe that these earthquakes are a manifestation of the convergence of the Indo-Australian and Asian tectonic plates that built the Himalayas in the past 50 million years.
