Earthquake rocks western Nepal, six dead

An earthquake on Wednesday struck Nepal, killing at least six people as they slept in their homes. About eight houses collapsed in the quake, and cracks were found in most of the houses following the geological event.

The earthquake was felt as far away as New Delhi and Uttarakhand. The earthquake at around 2:12 a.m. local time drove people in mountain villages out of their homes and many spent the whole night in the open.

Nepalese Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, who is also in western Nepal to campaign for an election campaign, is safe. He was attending election rallies and meeting people in the Dangadi district, 160 km south of the epicenter.

Nepal plans to hold elections for the federal parliament as well as provincial councils on November 20.

Six people were killed when they were crushed to their homes in a remote, sparsely populated mountain village, Kalpana Shrestha, the chief officer for the Doti district, said. Five others were wounded.

Videos circulated on social media showed villagers hauling the rubble by hand to find victims buried by earthquake-damaged homes, and lit mobile phone lights to move the piles of wood and stones that most mountainous villages make to build homes.

Most mountain villages are reached on foot and there are no roads to drive heavy equipment to aid in rescue operations.

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba said in a statement that he has ordered government officials to provide immediate assistance to the victims and their families and to provide all necessary medical assistance to the wounded.

The Nepal National Seismological and Research Center gave an initial magnitude of 6.6. The USGS provided measurements of 5.7 degrees with a depth of 18.1 kilometers (11.2 miles) and an epicenter 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of Dipayal.

Earthquakes are common in the mountains of Nepal which includes the highest mountain.

On October 19, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, and neighboring areas, forcing many people to flee their homes in search of safety.

The earthquake was felt in Kathmandu Valley and the surrounding areas. There were no reports of damage or injuries.

In April 2015, a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, killing nearly 9,000 people and injuring nearly 22,000 others. It also destroyed more than 800,000 homes and school buildings.
