Scientists: A high probability of a major earthquake in the Himalayas needs to be better prepared

Scientists on Wednesday said there is a strong possibility of a major earthquake in the Himalayas and stressed the need for better preparedness to minimize damage to life and property. An earthquake was felt in Uttarakhand after a powerful 6.6-magnitude earthquake shook the remote mountainous region of western Nepal early Wednesday morning, killing six people.

The Himalayas were formed by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates, said Ajay Bol, a geophysicist at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology.

Four major earthquakes have been recorded in the Himalayas over the past 150 years, including those at Shillong in 1897, Kangra in 1905, in Bihar and Nepal in 1934, and in Assam in 1950.

Despite this information, nothing can be said about the frequency of earthquakes, he said.

An earthquake occurred in Uttarkashi in 1991 followed by an earthquake in Chamoli in 1999 and one in Nepal in 2015.

Rather than fear earthquakes due to their unpredictability, he said, it is important to keep ourselves prepared to deal with them in a better way and reduce the damage they can cause to lives and property.

Structures need to be earthquake resistant, and people need to be aware of what they can do with preparations before earthquakes, when they happen and after they happen, Paul said.

Mock drills should be conducted at least once a year, he said, adding that if these things were done, the damage caused by the earthquake could be reduced by 99.99 percent.

Citing the example of Japan, Paul said that because of its better preparedness, the country does not suffer significant damage to life and property despite being constantly exposed to moderate-intensity earthquakes.

He said the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology is also continuing to send its teams to villages and schools to create awareness about what can be done to lessen the effects of the earthquake.

Another senior geologist at the institute Naresh Kumar said that Uttarakhand was placed in the fourth and fifth seismic zones due to its exposure to earthquakes.

He said that around 60 seismic observatories have been set up in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand to record the seismic movements around the clock.
