WELLINGTON, New Zealand – A powerful and shallow underwater earthquake Friday struck near Tonga in the South Pacific, prompting authorities to issue and then raise a tsunami warning.

The USGS said the 7.3-magnitude earthquake had an epicenter 211 kilometers (132 miles) east and southeast of Niavo, Tonga, at a depth of 24.8 kilometers (15 miles). She expected a strong tremor, but said the possibility of serious damage or injuries was small.

The US Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami warning, and later canceled it, one step short of a tsunami warning.

An undersea volcano in Tonga erupted in January, killing three people, covering its main island in a thick layer of volcanic ash and releasing millions of tons of water vapor high into the atmosphere.
