Earthquake risk keeps Te Awamutu Museum, Council Building closed

About 78 council staff are working normally in buildings that were evacuated in October.

The Te Awamutu Museum and its associated council building will remain closed “for the foreseeable future” due to earthquake risks.

Waipā District Council is now looking for some office space for 78 displaced workers and is considering a temporary museum.

The buildings were evacuated in October after an independent seismic assessment and a report has since confirmed they are at 20% of new building standard.

“In the event of an earthquake, this is a threat to life,” said a statement from the Waipa District Council.

CEO Gary Deet said a pop-up museum is an option but that the Waipā District Council would need to work with the Te Awamutu and Mana Česua museum trust board.

CEO Gary Diet said no one would be returning to the building in the “near future,” but he couldn’t give a more specific time frame.

The Museum will remain closed until we can work through the options. We are considering a pop-up museum but clearly need to work hand in hand with the Te Awamutu Museum Board of Trust and Mana whenua.”

“The reality is that we won’t be able to move much of the collection into a pop-up space because there are issues like climate control that need to be taken into account. In the meantime, museum staff are still able to meet contractual requirements with the Ministry of Education and are working on other opportunities to enhance our region’s heritage.” “.

The council was looking into possible avenues for repairing the building, using outside expertise.

“This will also take some time and there are a lot of issues to consider, including financial ones,” said Dietet. “So I don’t think any decisions about the building’s future will be made quickly. In the meantime, our focus is on getting most of the staff back into the office and sorting out a possible museum option.”

Of the 78 employees who normally work in the buildings, some have been working from home while others have found a place in the offices of Te Awamutu or Cambridge.
