Eugene, ore. – The Eugene Water and Electricity Board is building two huge concrete barrels to store water for the city of Eugene, both containers are built for earthquake resistance.

The concrete water containers are located in the South Eugene Hills on East 40th Street. These two containers are the first of six facilities planned across the South Hills, and each container will be 35 feet high, 212 feet in diameter, and will be able to hold 7.5 million gallons. EWEB says they expect the project to be completed in December 2023, assuming there are no construction delays.

EWEB says the new water reservoirs are being built to be more resistant to major natural disasters such as the expected Cascadia subduction zone earthquake. Scientists say this earthquake is expected to hit the Pacific Northwest sometime in the relatively near future and cause massive damage to the region. EWEB says the new water tanks are designed with flexible tubes that can bend without breaking in the event of an earthquake, as well as sensors to detect tremors and shut off valves to keep water in the tanks.

EWEB said they purchased the property on which the new containers were built in the 1950s with the intent of building water storage. However, it was not until 2015 that the first stages of construction began when EWEB created a new water system plan. EWEB officials say Oregon’s water systems are required to have a plan that looks at least 20 years in the future and lays out the community’s water and infrastructure needs. The latest EWEB plan involved building six massive earthquake-resistant reservoirs in the southern hills.

Locating the tanks was a challenge, said EWEB officials, as they had to be at a specific height of 607 feet. Currently under construction, the site is one of the only ones in all of Eugene, located in a residential neighborhood at the end of Patterson Avenue off East 40th Street. EWEB officials said they are trying to build in a way that respects neighbors, preserves the savannah oak habitat on the west side of the site, and leaves as much green and open space as possible.
