A powerful earthquake hits the remote West Texas desert

MINTON, Texas (AP) — A powerful earthquake rocked a sparsely populated swath of desert in western Texas Thursday, causing tremors as far away as the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez.

The 5.3-magnitude quake struck around 3:30 p.m., according to Jim DeBerry, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in the West Texas city of Midland. He said the strength of the quake meant it likely caused damage to the oil patch and outlying trees, but nothing has been reported yet.

DeBerry said the epicenter was 23 miles (37 kilometers) south of Menton, a small area south of the New Mexico state line and 95 miles (153 kilometers) west of Midland.

State Rep. Eddie Morales Jr., whose county includes Mentone, said he has spoken with local authorities and there have been no reports of injuries. He said via Twitter that state officials would “inspect roads, bridges and other infrastructure as a precautionary measure”.

DeBerry said there were reports of people feeling the vibrations from the quake 200 miles (515 kilometers) west in the border city of Ciudad Juarez and 200 miles (515 kilometers) south in Terlingua, a small community near Rio Grande and Big Bend National Parks.
