Earthquake victims in the Far West are in makeshift shelters

Eighteen Dalit families from Biskhet Village in Talara Rural Municipality-8, Baihang reside in a plastic tunnel erected after the earthquake on November 8. The earthquake, which measured 6.6 on the Richter scale, had its epicenter in the Khaptad National Park area of Doti and its aftershocks destroyed their huts and forced them to relocate.

The fragile shelter is crammed with up to 75 people from 18 families sheltering under a single plastic tunnel set up on rented land. The displaced are hoping for immediate permanent resettlement to avoid the long, harsh winter that awaits them. But they have not received any support from the local authorities since the earthquake.

“The days are still fine with some sunshine, but the nights are getting cooler and colder,” said Chakhodi Damai, 68, a tunnel resident. “We haven’t had a good night’s sleep since we left our house. We don’t have enough space inside the tunnel to lie down at night.”

All of the displaced families in Baskhit village are landowners liberated from “halyas” – bonded farm labourers.

“My house is on the verge of collapse and going back to live in is out of the question,” said Paro Damai, a mother of three young children. “The adults somehow bear the hardships, but it is difficult for the children. I am afraid that my children will get sick if they have to spend the winter here inside this tunnel.”

Lalmaty Damai, another resident of the tunnel, said her family did not have enough clothes and bedding to get through the winter and no one had offered any relief or any support. “The chief of the ward visited us and said that efforts are underway to provide us with tents, clothes and other relief items, but we have not received anything yet,” she said.

The town of Beshet is also prone to landslides, and with the land area weakened by the earthquake and its aftershocks, the villagers are afraid to return to the village and are anxious because they have nowhere to go.

“This monsoon has been hard on us,” said displaced Padam Damai. “We are currently sheltering in the tunnel but we had to leave our cattle behind in the village. I am very worried about them.”

According to the data of the Talara Rural Municipality, 45 houses were completely destroyed, 73 houses were severely damaged, and 353 houses were partially damaged by the earthquake.

Prakash Rukaya, the rural mayor, says they are making efforts to manage the budget to find a suitable site to move the Halia settlement from the landslide-prone village.

“We will soon distribute tents and clothes to the displaced,” Ruqaya said. “We will have to move them elsewhere and it will take longer than we expected to find a suitable site.”

At least six people died, 12 were injured, and hundreds were displaced by the earthquake that shook the Duti Rural Municipality of Porbichauke.

According to Dev Bohara, Secretary General of the Nepal Red Cross, Sudurpachim, 1,412 houses were completely destroyed and 3,802 houses were partially damaged in the earthquakes.

Victims who have since been living in temporary shelters face a shortage of relief items. “There is a shortage of tarpaulins, tents, winter clothes and medicine,” he said.

The rural mayor also said that additional relief materials had not arrived from the district disaster management committee so that they could distribute them to the victims.

Another victim, Saraswati Khadka, said the situation in the temporary habitat was getting worse day by day. “There are pregnant women, young children and the elderly who will suffer more than others in the harsh days of winter,” she said. “Those whose houses are totally or partially damaged cannot go home. But the school building where we were sheltering is full beyond capacity. People are living on the streets now.”
