By India Internet Bureau today: At least 46 people have been killed and more than 700 injured after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake jolted Indonesia’s main island of Java for several seconds on Monday afternoon.

The Associated Press quoted Suharyanto, head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, as saying, “There are 46 dead in Cianjur Regional Hospital and about 700 injured. Many were injured due to exposure to collapsed buildings.”

The Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said that Monday’s earthquake occurred on land in Cianjur, 75 km southeast of the capital, Jakarta, and at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), adding that there was no possibility of a tsunami.

The National Disaster Management Agency said in a statement that several homes and an Islamic boarding school in the area were damaged, while officials continued to assess the full scale of the damage.

Footage from Metro TV showed some buildings in Cianjur almost completely reduced to rubble as anxious residents gathered outside.

Mochlis, who was in Cianjur when the quake struck, said he felt a “strong tremor” and the walls and ceiling of his office building were damaged.

“I am very shocked. I am afraid of another earthquake,” Mochlis told Metro TV, adding that people fled their homes, and in response some fainted and vomited.

BMKG said 25 aftershocks were recorded in the two hours following the quake.

Reuters witnesses said some people in the capital, Jakarta, vacated offices in the central business district, while others reported feeling buildings shaking and seeing furniture moving.

Indonesia lies on both sides of the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a highly seismically active area where different plates meet on the Earth’s crust and cause a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes.
