Indonesia earthquake leaves more than 250 dead

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck West Java, Indonesia. The earthquake collapsed buildings in Cianjur and triggered landslides. Hundreds of people were injured.

Rescuers are still combing through the rubble of collapsed buildings and trying to reach remote areas devastated by the earthquake that struck part of Indonesia’s densely populated West Java province.

More than 250 people were killed after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck early Monday afternoon in Senagore, West Java, just about 50 miles southeast of the densely populated capital, Jakarta.

At least 31 people were missing and another 400 were injured, 100 of which were considered serious.

The quake was felt so powerfully that higher elevations swayed, the capital, Jakarta, but most of the damage came from the Senajur district itself, where buildings collapsed and landslides buried others.

The Associated Press reported that a school and a hospital were among the buildings damaged in Sinajur.

A local government official said that many of the dead were children who were in the school when the quake struck and their buildings collapsed on top of them.

Near Cijedil, a landslide buried homes and streets, leaving at least 25 people missing.
