A 5.9-magnitude earthquake hits northwestern Turkey, injuring 68 people

The Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) said a 5.9-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in Juliaca district hit Duzce city at 0408 am (0108 GMT). The earthquake occurred at a depth of 6.81 kilometers (4.2 miles).

It was also felt in Istanbul and other provinces, including northwestern Bolu, Sakarya, Kocaeli, Bursa, Bilecik, and western Izmir and Kutahya, as well as the capital, Ankara.

After the earthquake, 101 aftershocks were recorded. The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said that power outages are being imposed in the area as a precautionary measure.

Duzce Governor Cevdet Atay announced that schools will be closed on Wednesday due to the earthquake.

In 1999, the city of Duzce was hit by a strong 7.2-magnitude earthquake that lasted 30 seconds, killing 710 people and injuring 2,679.
