Magnitude 5.1 earthquake strikes Ilocos Norte

MANILA, Philippines – A 5.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Ilocos Norte Thursday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (VIVOLEX) said.

Seismologists in the state said the epicenter was eight kilometers southeast of Burgos. Recorded at 11:05 p.m

Vivolks said in his bulletin that the quake was tectonic in origin and its focus was 22 kilometers deep.

The agency indicated that the following intensity was felt in these areas:

Intensity V or “strong” vibrations – Adams, Bacarra, Bangui, Burgos, Pagudpud, Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte Intensity IV or “moderately strong” vibrations – Badoc, Bacarra, Bangui, Burgos, Pagudpud, Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte, St. Illinois. Senait, Vigan, Ilocos Sur Intensity III or “weak” vibrations – San Vicente, Ilocos Sur Intensity I or “barely perceptible” vibrations – Pantay, Ilocos Sur

The intensity of the instruments is similarly recorded by Phivolcs in these places:

Intensity IV – Pasuquin and Laoag City, Ilocos Norte Intensity III – Claveria, Peñablanca and Gonzaga, Cagayan; Density 1 – Tabuk City Kalinga; Santol, Union; Ilagan City, Isabella

While no damage from the quake is expected, state seismologists have warned the public about possible aftershocks that may occur.
