Jokowi says evacuating earthquake victims is a top priority

TEMPO.CO, JAKARTA – President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Thursday emphasized that the government’s main priority in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that struck Cianjur in West Java is to evacuate a number of victims believed to be still under the rubble.

The President said that there are still a large number of victims who have not yet been evacuated due to the rugged terrain and their dispersal over a wide area.

“In a village in Mangonkarta Village, Kogynang District, there are still 39 victims who have not been evacuated from the ruins of the building. So, the main priority is evacuation,” Jokowi said at the site of the Mangunkerta disaster, Kojinang, Thursday, November. 24.

Regarding the distribution of logistics to the survivors who are currently in the refugee camps, he said it has been distributed as evenly as possible.

“Includes clean water, distribution is good. I’m present again at Cianjur to make sure everything goes according to plan,” said the chief.

The President visited a number of villages badly affected by the quake and continued to pay visits to the injured survivors at Sayang Cianjur General Hospital.

So far, hundreds of people have been injured and 271 people have lost their lives after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake rocked Cianjur Regency on Monday, November 21, which was considered a shallow tremor and is believed to have been triggered by the Semandiri fault.
