Thanksgiving earthquake in Lugoff, Elgin areas marks rumble #82

ELGEN, South Carolina — After weeks of the latest earthquake being felt in the Logoff and Elgin areas, life rattled just before noon Thursday.

The Thanksgiving earthquake marks the 82nd of this earthquake since late December 2021 with a final revised magnitude of 2.0. The latest USGS data places the earthquake off Jordan Road near many other earthquakes that were centered along Fort Jackson Road.

The quake is below the range people normally feel, and as of Friday evening, only nine people reported feeling it.

With the last earthquake felt on October 30, the latest earthquake follows a trend that has decreased somewhat from a frequency of one to two per month – less than the swarm height that sometimes featured several earthquakes in one day.

Officials are still working to determine the cause of the recent quakes but no concrete answers have emerged as Kershaw County is rapidly approaching the one-year mark when these quakes first began – December 27, 2021.
