Indonesia earthquake death toll rises to 321 as search continues – DW – 11/27/2022

The death toll from the earthquake that struck Indonesia’s main island of Java this week has risen to 321 after rescuers found more bodies.

Suharyanto, the head of the National Disaster Management Agency who goes by one name, said rescuers found three more bodies on Sunday after finding eight bodies on Saturday.

They will resume the search on Monday, focusing on areas where the missing are believed to have been buried.

Thousands of homes have been damaged and people have been displaced

The quake, which measured 5.6 on the Richter scale, hit the densely populated Cianjur district in West Java province on Monday.

It damaged more than 62,000 homes and displaced more than 73,000 residents.

“Aid workers are gradually reaching the affected population in remote villages with logistical and food supplies and setting up tents for them,” Suharyanto said.

While the magnitude of the quake itself would normally be expected to cause minor damage, experts said the proximity to fault lines, the shallowness of the quake, and inadequate infrastructure unable to withstand earthquakes all contributed to the massive damage.

Experts monitoring seismic activity said that 284 aftershocks with gradually decreasing intensity have occurred since Monday’s main quake.
