Earthquakes should be a “wake-up call” for Oceania’s leaders

The rector of the church in Fiji says the recent catastrophic earthquakes that devastated parts of Indonesia and the Solomon Islands should be a wake-up call for leaders in the Oceania region and beyond.

Archbishop Peter Lui Chung offered prayers last week for all those affected across the region. Opened a three-day online chat this week about the future of “Our Ocean Home”

“I remain deeply concerned about the deterioration of the reality people are experiencing to recover from natural disasters in our region, and I pray for those who have been seriously injured as a result of devastating earthquakes, especially the souls of the dead and their families,” Archbishop Chung said.

As president of the Oceania Federation of Catholic Bishops’ Conferences, Archbishop Chung will host fellow bishops from the Oceania region at their General Assembly in Suva in February 2023.

Archbishop Chung said he hopes that by listening to the diverse experts drawn from Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia, the dialogue at this week’s event can generate insights and recommendations from the parties for consideration by the assembly in February 2023.

With Suva as the gathering site, this is the first time in 16 years that the Pacific Island nation will have the opportunity to host a panel of experts and promote marginalized voices from Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia on the theme “Our Ocean is Homeless.”
