BHP workers safely after the earthquake near Nickel West

All BHP employees are safe after a miner temporarily loses contact with his underground workers at a mine site near Leinster, Western Australia, after an earthquake.

Geoscience Australia reported a magnitude 4 seismic event that occurred near the Nickel West mine at a depth of five kilometers in the Goldfields region on Wednesday, November 23, 2022.

A BHP spokeswoman said the quake had led to power outages and the subsequent loss of communications with members of the Nickel West Leinster site’s underground team.

“All members of the team are safe and unharmed,” she said.

“The safety of our people and operations is underpinned by our robust operating systems, technical monitoring procedures, and the diligence and hard work of our teams.

“Nothing is more important than the safety of our people. In line with our normal operations, operations will resume once the safety tests are completed.”

The Australian Workers Union (AWU) urged WorkSafe and the company to release more details about the incident.

“BHP needs to give us the full story. What happened? Will this happen again? Can it be prevented?” Brad Gandy, state branch secretary of the Australian Workers’ Federation, said, according to Seven West Media.

“Companies should talk to us, talk to the relevant bodies – not closing lines and cuts.”
