Churches face religious intolerance during the Cianjur earthquake rescue effort

11/28/2022 Indonesia (ICC) – The earthquake that struck Cianjur, West Java, Indonesia on Monday, November 21, 2022 resulted in many casualties. About 323 people were killed, and nine more people are still missing due to the earthquake.

Local and international relief organizations have poured into Indonesia to help the thousands displaced during the earthquake and to provide medical care for the injured. During the rescue efforts, a video of some unidentified individuals removing the name of a church from a humanitarian aid tent that was providing care to earthquake victims in Cianjur, West Java, went viral.

In the video circulating on social media, some people can be seen decoding the phrase “Loving Work Team of the Indonesian Evangelical Reformed Church” from outside the tent.

The West Java Governor, Ridwan Kamil, condemned the act, saying, “This is very unfortunate and must not happen again. The identity card of the tent presenter was removed by the unscrupulous residents of the Cianjur refugee camp.”

Radwan Kamel said natural disasters can happen to anyone, and aid providers should be allowed to provide assistance from all walks of life, regardless of faith or religion.

The governor also said that it was not an unusual act for the church to name the relief tent after itself. “The use of flags, banners and posters by aid providers is normal because it is perhaps part of reporting accountability to donors that they trust,” he said.

Ridwan Kamel asked the West Java Police Chief to follow up on the matter.

He added, “Although we are not brothers in faith, we are still brothers in nationality and humanity.”
