Days after the eruption, some Hay River residents were shaken again

Some High River residents say they felt a slight tremor in their homes on Tuesday, coinciding with reports of earthquakes in northern Alberta.

The unusual sensation came just three days after an explosion ripped through a property on Beaver Crescent, causing an earthquake across the city, damaging several homes and injuring two people.

This time, earthquakes east of the Peace River appear to be to blame.

The USGS gave two smaller initial magnitudes of 4.9 and 5.3 for the same earthquakes, and reported a third earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 between the two.

The agency recorded the earthquake at 5:55 p.m. as follows: “Strength felt near Reno. Lightly felt in eastern British Columbia and western Alberta. A number of aftershocks were felt in the same area.”

Meanwhile, the cause of Saturday’s explosion is still under investigation.

A spokesperson for the NWT Fire Superintendent’s Office said Tuesday that there is no update and no timeline for completing this investigation.
