5.7-magnitude earthquake hits the Indonesian island of Java | Indonesia

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake has struck Indonesia’s main island of Java, the US Geological Survey said, shaking the same city that was devastated by another quake last month that left more than 330 people dead.

The quake hit the ground at a depth of 112 kilometers (70 miles) and the epicenter was located 18 kilometers southeast of the city of Banjar, according to the USGS. There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.

The country’s meteorological agency gave a greater magnitude of 6.4 to the quake, which also shook buildings in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, according to an AFP journalist.

The agency said the tremor caused buildings to shake in the town of Garut in West Java province and warned residents near the epicenter to beware of possible aftershocks. However, she said there is no threat of a tsunami.

Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide.

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake last month rocked the West Java town of Cianjur, killing 331 people, injuring thousands and displacing tens of thousands after buildings collapsed and triggered landslides.

Many were found buried under the rubble in the days after the earthquake, and only several successful rescues were reported, including one to free a six-year-old boy described as a “miraculous” by emergency workers.

A military official told local station Kompas that residents of the town were shaken again by Saturday’s quake, with minor roofing damage.
