A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s West Java region on Saturday, sending buildings running out of people, the Indonesian geophysics agency BMKG said.

The agency said that the earthquake is not likely to cause a tsunami. The earthquake was felt in the capital, Jakarta, about 200 kilometers from the epicenter.

Abdul Mahari, spokesman for the Indonesian Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), said one person was injured and four houses were damaged in the town of Garut.

Some residents of other towns and cities in West Java said on social media that they felt the quake strongly. A Reuters witness in Bandung, capital of West Java province, said hotel guests ran out of the building but have since gone back inside.

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake last month hit Cianjur district in West Java, killing more than 300 people.

BNPB president Suharyanto told local news channel MetroTV that authorities were still investigating other places near the epicenter on Saturday.

“We hope the impact will not be as bad as Cianjur because this time the epicenter is very deep,” he told Metro TV.

The size was initially reported at 6.4 with a depth of 118 km (73 mi) and was later updated with a depth of 109 km.

BMKG reported a smaller 2.9-magnitude quake at a depth of 107 kilometers near the first quake more than an hour later.
