A 6.7-magnitude earthquake has struck in the sea near Samoa, the USGS reports.

The earthquake occurred at 8.24 am New Zealand time, 211 km southwest of Apia, at a depth of 36 km.

An aftershock of magnitude 4.9 was recorded to the northwest of the original quake at 9.27 am.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for American Samoa, but that has now been cancelled.

“The tsunami generated by this earthquake based on all available data… There is a threat to American Samoa from sea level fluctuations and strong sea currents that can be hazardous along beaches… in ports… and in coastal waters,” I advised earlier.

She said that there was no danger of a tsunami in the Pacific Ocean as a result of the quake.

The Samoan Bureau of Meteorology put a tsunami watch into effect, and it was reported that one government building in Apia had been evacuated.
