A 5.3-magnitude earthquake hits the northeastern coast

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines.

It struck off the northeast coast on Wednesday at around 1pm local time.

According to the National Institute of Seismology, no seismic damage or aftershocks are expected.

The institute said the quake was felt in the metropolitan area of ​​Manila.

More than 20 people were injured after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit the north of the country in October.

Several people died after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit the mountainous province of Abra in July. It was the strongest record recorded in the country in several years.

Earthquake drills are conducted across the country every three months to prepare for possible tsunamis.

In October 2013, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the island of Bohol in the central Philippines, killing more than 200 people and triggering landslides.

The earthquake displaced nearly 400,000 people and damaged tens of thousands of homes.

It altered the landscape of the island and “earth ruptured” pushed a piece of land up to three metres, creating a wall of rock over the epicenter.

In 1990, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake in the northern Philippines caused a fault line extending more than 100 km.

The death toll was estimated at over 1,200 and extensive damage was caused to buildings in Manila.
