An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia in West Java

On December 8, 2022, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit the Indonesian province of West Java, and earthquakes were felt in the capital city, Jakarta, and the surrounding areas. Image credits: BMKG/Twitter.

The accident, which just happened, did not reveal cases of serious damage and loss.

The tremors sent residents of the epicenter fleeing their homes in panic, along with high-rise buildings in Jakarta experiencing slight swaying and causing evacuations.

A news segment from CNBC Indonesia presents recorded footage of the evacuations, including a live interview with Sukko Prayitno Ade, deputy geophysics representative at the country’s Geophysics Agency (BMKG). He points out that “there is no reason to panic” and that an earthquake of this “magnitude” would have little damage.

He also urged local residents to mainly obtain their information from BMKG, and to avoid unfounded information.

It is worth noting that this incident is the third occurrence of an earthquake within 17 days inside the country.

On November 22, 2022, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Cianjur district in West Java, leaving more than 50 confirmed deaths and survivors trapped under rubble for days.

The country is no stranger to earthquakes and other natural disasters due to its proximity to arc volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.
