A satellite video showing a changing landscape during an earthquake is going viral, with users suggesting that the clip shows recent footage of an earthquake in Indonesia. The video is from 2018, however, and has nothing to do with the 2022 earthquake.

Users share satellite footage showing the landscape shifting, giving way and pushing infrastructure apart as if it were a recent clip of an Indonesian earthquake (here, here, here, here, here).

One account wrote here on November 25, 2022: “Satellite video of the Indonesian earthquake. Entire land mass is shifting.”

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Indonesian province of West Java on November 22, killing at least 268 people here.

However, the footage shared to these posts shows that there was an earthquake in 2018.

Reverse image searches reveal that satellite footage appeared in news reports in early October 2018, about a deadly 7.5-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that hit the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on September 28, 2018 (here, here, and here).

The liquefaction during the earthquake boiled the earth and turned the soil into a liquid. At least 1,600 died in the disaster (here and here).
