200 million rupees to be spent on identifying ‘hot spots’ for earthquakes and landslides

ISLAMABAD: The government will spend funds of up to 200 million rupees to advance an ongoing project, during the current financial year, to identify and compile data on the country’s ‘active faults’ and potential landslide ‘hotspot’ areas with a view to reducing disaster risk activities. .

The project, which started with an allocation of 40 million rupees under the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP 2021-22), will be completed at an estimated total cost of 412.769 million rupees in a period of three years, according to an official document available with APP.

The main focus of the project, titled “Pakistan National Research Program on Geohazards (Earthquakes and Landslides) – Acquisition of data along active faults and identification of potential landslide areas”, will help identify earthquake-prone areas and landslide hotspots in the country.

In addition, a new network of global navigation satellite stations (GNSS – permanent and periodic) and a nationwide landslide inventory database will be established.

“The result will lay a solid foundation for reliable risk assessment and risk stratification of earthquakes and landslides. It will also pave the way for more detailed region-specific risk assessment studies.

During the first year of the project, the respective departments were tasked with filling posts by recruitment from the regular force, purchasing durable goods, setting up the project office, and collecting and reviewing technical data.

In addition, desk work to select potential sites, field work to obtain fault data and landslide inventory, data processing and analysis along with compilation of the initial report had to be carried out during the last fiscal year.
