A 5.6-magnitude earthquake hits the eastern city of Davao

MANILA, Philippines — A 5.6-magnitude earthquake jolted Davao Oriental City at 4:01 a.m. Saturday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs tracked the epicenter 51 kilometers southeast of Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental.

State seismologists reported that the earthquake was felt at Intensity IV in Governor Generoso and Don Marcelino in Davao Oriental, Bansalan in Davao del Sur, and Malabatan and Malongon in Sarangani.

The institute described Intensity IV as “fairly strong” and “generally felt by people indoors and some people outdoors.”

People felt the earthquake at intensity 3 in Davao City, Mati, Davao Oriental; Alabile, Glan and Kyamba in Sarangani; Tupi Municipality in South Cotabato and General Santos City

measured at Intensity II in Kidapawan City, Arakan, Malang, Makilala and Beket in Cotabato; Sur, Sarangani; Surallah, South Cotabato and Colombia, Sultan Qudrat

Vivoleks said the depth of the tectonic focus of the earthquake was 61 kilometers.

She added that no damage is expected, but aftershocks could follow.
