Apartment building destroyed in explosion ‘picked up by seismic monitors’

A three-storey building on the island of Jersey was completely destroyed in an explosion so huge that it was picked up by British seismographs.

Three people have been confirmed dead and up to 12 are missing, and police said it could take weeks to search through the rubble.

The horrific explosion and fire occurred near the port in the capital, St Helier, early Saturday morning (0400 GMT) while people were asleep.

Neighbors reported their homes being shaken and thrown from their beds as debris from the blast was expected.

Chief of Police Robin Smith described the scene of an explosion of “complete devastation” on Pierre Rudd.

He did not speculate on what happened but said the authorities had “working hypotheses”.

Smith confirmed that fire services were called to the property on the Friday before the blast after residents reported the smell of gas.

He said that between 20 and 30 people had been evacuated and two “walking wounded” were being treated in hospital.

Asked about the possibility of more deaths, he said: “There must be an acknowledgment that we could have more deaths.

“This is a prolonged incident that will last for days, possibly weeks.”

Jersey is a British Crown Dependency with a population of over 100,000, located off the coast of northern France.

Jersey Premier Christina Moore said it was a “huge shock” and “our condolences go out to the affected families”.

“During these difficult times, I think it is reassuring for everyone to see the incredible strength we have within our emergency services and once again, we thank everyone who came to the rescue and continued to be on the scene.

“This will take a few days and we will keep everyone updated and do everything we can to ensure everyone is properly cared for.”

Jersey Consumer Council Chairman Carl Walker said: “Thoughts are with all those affected by this morning’s eruption in St Helier, which was powerful enough to be picked up by the British Geological Survey’s seismographs.

“Now is the time for the Jersey community to strike back like never before.”
