The sky’s the limit for Leo Lyon, who is graduating this fall with a BA in English from Arizona State University’s College of Arts and Sciences.

A proud member of the LGBTQ community, Leon originally began his journey hoping to teach. At the suggestion of an advisor, they looked into the English language and discovered the many career opportunities the degree would offer. “It turns out you can do a lot with this discipline,” Lyon said. “It’s given me so many opportunities that I never thought I could have. Now I don’t want to teach anymore; I want to write, like an editorial assistant, and work in the publishing industry. Who knows? Maybe I could be a screenwriter? New York bestseller Times?

The Brawley, California native moved to Los Angeles when they were just 17 years old. Leone knew their passions for entertainment, acting, writing, and producing would find an outlet in Los Angeles, but they also needed a degree to make it happen.

Working at Starbucks allowed Lyon to enter the Starbucks College Achievement Program as a transfer student, transferring from a local college to online ASU. Initially anxious about moving to online courses, they soon discover the many benefits of earning an online degree, not least of which is the flexibility to set their own schedule and learn on their own terms.

Online coursework has also opened up opportunities for Leon to make an impact on other students’ academic journeys, such as working with first-year students and faculty at the Writers’ Studio.

“I had the opportunity to work with first-year ENG 101 students on composition and immerse themselves in the world of writing,” they said. “It was a learning process, but it’s worth noting how much I can’t thank the team! They are very professional but also very friendly. They want you to succeed and see how you can impact a student’s life.”

what happened after that? Leon just published a poetry book, “October 10”, and plans to take some time to promote it. They also plan to indulge in more travel before starting their next project.

“Honestly, I couldn’t afford college, and I didn’t think I’d be able to get a bachelor’s degree,” Lyon said. “However, working at Starbucks has helped me benefit from SCAP. I can get my degree, not be in debt, and still be able to have a life. I wouldn’t have done it without my support at Starbucks!”

Question: What did you learn while at ASU online—in the classroom or otherwise—that surprised you or changed your perspective?

Answer: During the pandemic, many of my friends who have transitioned from in-person to online have been struggling to find the in-person connection they would normally get from attending in-person sessions. It helped change my perspective because everyone was working on finding their balance; I realized that online courses were a better fit for me. I had a lot of anxiety going to class in person, but I miss that sometimes. However, being online allowed me to go and be as spontaneous as going to NYC but taking my school with me. That was cool!

Q: Who was the professor who taught you the most important lesson while you were at ASU online?

A: I worked as a mentor at ASU Writing Studio, and I met my teacher Esparza, who lives in Chicago, but he made me feel as if we were in person. I learned more about my degree and saw where it led him. It inspired me to focus on my studies because hard work brings great opportunities. I had so much fun working with him and learning lessons about myself and my English writing abilities.

Q: What is your best advice for those still in school?

A: Do the work. I know sometimes online school can seem like an easy way to procrastinate. But, while doing the work to have the freedom to go where life takes you, online ASU really allowed me to have that. Other times, you’ll feel like you’re on your own; Fear not, you will meet people along the way and find your own support groups. Numerous clubs and opportunities can help you feel less lonely. I also tried to make friends. I have one friend named David, and we leaned on each other all semester, and we still keep in touch!

Q: Where is your favorite place to study strength?

A: I used to travel to work in coffee shops (not just Starbucks). I’ve always dreamed of being a fan of art cafes. So, it gave me a chance to try different styles of coffee and also manage my business. It has become a weekly tradition to try a new place every week to get the job done. When I worked my two internships, on top of school, the only place I felt productive was in my coffee shops. Hooray for Long Beach, California, coffeehouses! They are elite and if anyone comes along they should try!

Q: What are your plans after graduation?

A: The first thing I want to do after graduation is REST. I was working two courses, school full time, and working a full time job. I want to be able to sleep and not be stressed. Other than that, I want to continue working on my projects. I have a book that came out recently called “October 10th”. I didn’t care much about it and want to promote it more and maybe write another book? two? Also, I want to travel all over the world with my best friend and enjoy life.

Q: If someone gave you $40 million to solve one problem on our planet, what would you solve?

A: Come to think of it, 40 million is not a lot. I want to go to a place that is within my reach and that I feel badly needed. The first thing I think of is my home, Imperial County. I would split the money evenly across the county where it is most needed, such as social services, mental health department, schools, etc. I’ve always loved my home, and it’s where it gave me purpose. Giving back to my community is something I will always stand for and fight for. I would like to know that my home is being taken care of, especially when I no longer live there.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
