The New Community of Madrid remains on guard 212 years after the earthquake sequence

NEW MADRID, Mo. (KFVS) – December 16, 2022 marks 212 years since the New Madrid, Missouri earthquake sequence was felt as far as New York City. The magnitude 7.5 earthquake destroyed the city and changed the lives of the residents.

The New Madrid Historical Museum has an entire exhibition dedicated to these earthquakes. The exhibition includes many eyewitness testimonies that visitors can read or listen to.

A resident of New Madrid in 1811 said in his account of the events: “We began to hear a roaring noise like thunder, in an instant the earth began to shake so much that it was impossible to stand or walk.” “The trauma lasted for months, and many families fled.”

Even after 212 years, museum director Jeff Grunewald said the new Madrid fault line is dangerous.

“You’re in the most seismically active area in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains,” Grunewald said.

Earthquakes more than two centuries ago shook the nation. Some legends even say it tolled church bells in Boston, however, Grunewald said they still don’t have proof for that. The New Madrid community still acknowledges that an earthquake of this magnitude could happen again.

“We still have them,” said Grunwald, “there are probably three hundred to four hundred earthquakes a year that hit the New Madrid Seismic Zone.”

Although the fault line is located in southeastern Missouri, the risk of a major earthquake here could affect many others.

“In this part of the country, shock waves from seismic activity actually travel up to twenty times as far as they do on the West Coast,” Grunwald said.

Even after so many years, the community is still willing.

“If something happens, we are probably equipped to endure at least two weeks before help gets here.”
