The bell tower and main body of Napier Cathedral were found to be subject to earthquakes, forcing an investigation into the danger of keeping it open.

The Waiapu Cathedral Building is a multi-structure complex consisting of chancel, chapel, nave, bell tower, and other single-storey terminal buildings that was constructed in three phases between 1956 and 1960.

The remaining parts of the cathedral were valued at between 25% and 40% of the new construction standard; Compared to the 34% required by the Building Code.

Hedge noted that the MBIE guidelines on seismic ratings stated that while a low percentage rating from NBS indicates an increased life safety risk in the event of an earthquake, this does not mean that the building is an imminent danger.

Since the first assessment in 2013, the parish has taken a number of precautionary health and safety measures to limit capacity in the nave (the main body of the cathedral) and to restrict access to the bell tower.

Rt Reverend Andrew Hedge, the Bishop of Waiapu, says the diocese is considering the risks of staying open and looking at the cost of treatment.

“In light of the latest report, staff will be moved from the belfry to other parts of the building and for the time being, we will be closing the belfry,” Hedge said.

The diocese was now investigating the risks of remaining open and looking at the cost of treatment.

“Once we have these details, we will be able to turn our attention to the issue of financing the seismic works needed to bring our beloved cathedral to the required standard,” said Hedge.

The Napier City Council said it would issue the Waiapu Council a notice of earthquake risk “in due course”.

This means the council has up to 15 years to carry out the required consolidation work.
